From Extraordinary Experiences to Extraordinary Lives (FEEEL)
How could profound experiences ripple outward into lasting good?
The Opportunity
Throughout history and across cultures, people have described experiences that fundamentally changed how they understood themselves, other people, and the world.
These experiences arise in many ways, including psychedelics, near-death and shared- death experiences, contemplative practice, encounters with awe, serious illness, profound grief, spiritual or religious experiences, military service, childbirth, and other major life events that can reshape identity, values, meaning, or worldview.
For some people, these experiences lead to lasting changes in how they live. They become more compassionate, more connected, more generous, more engaged in relationships, more committed to service, or more intentional about how they contribute to the lives of others. For others, the effects fade. Some return largely to previous patterns. Others struggle to integrate what they experienced. Why do these paths diverge?
That question sits at the heart of From Extraordinary Experiences to Extraordinary Lives, or FEEEL, an initiative of Healing Hearts, Changing Minds. FEEEL seeks to better understand the conditions under which extraordinary experiences become enduring changes in how people live, relate, care, create, serve, and participate in the world around them.
A Question That Crosses Many Disciplines
Research relevant to these questions already exists across many fields, including psychedelic science, near-death and shared death experience research, consciousness studies, contemplative science, Spirituality and spiritual care, hospice and palliative medicine, awe and self-transcendent experience research and more.
These fields have developed largely independently, using different terminology, measures, theories, and research traditions. Yet they often appear to be asking closely related questions about identity, meaning, connection, behavior, purpose, integration, and lasting change. FEEEL is designed to bring these currently fragmented bodies of knowledge into conversation with one another.
